A real Basic Knots guide, and a real taut-line hitch photo to replace a diagram that wasn't working
Several guides on this site, Emergency Shelter Basics chief among them, tell you to tie a taut-line hitch or a trucker's hitch without ever teaching the knot itself. Basic Knots is that missing skill: the square knot, bowline, clove hitch, two half-hitches, sheet bend, taut-line hitch, and trucker's hitch, each with a real illustration (sourced from Wikimedia Commons, properly credited) and the actual tying steps, plus the honest failure mode for the ones that need a backup or can work loose with no load on them. Also replaced Emergency Shelter Basics' hand-drawn taut-line hitch diagram, which wasn't actually helping, with a real photo of the knot loose and snugged tight, and added a cross-link to the new guide for the rest.

Offline access to the highest-stakes pages, for exactly the outage this site is written for
This site was already installable (a manifest.json existed) but had no service worker behind it, so an 'installed' site still needed a live connection for every page, undermining the exact power/internet outage scenario the mission is about. A new service worker now saves about 18 of the highest-stakes pages (What to Do Right Now, Ready Set Ready, First Aid Basics, Family Communication Plan, and more) directly in the browser after a first visit, so they still load with no internet. Network-first with cache-fallback: an online visitor always gets current content, and it never touches the 232-PDF downloads folder or the search index's own files. Documented in a new Privacy Policy section in the same plain-language style as the rest of that page: what's saved, that it never leaves the device, and how to clear it.

Five new diagrams: the site's second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth ever
This site had exactly one diagram anywhere on it. Five new real, labeled diagrams now supplement content that's genuinely hard to visualize in prose alone: a splint diagram in First Aid Basics showing why the joint above and below the injury both get immobilized, a meeting-points diagram in Family Communication Plan showing the actual spatial structure of the plan, a cross-section of the biosand filter's internal layers and outlet-tube mechanism, a "which path am I on" diagram in Ready, Set, Ready, and a taut-line hitch knot diagram in Emergency Shelter Basics, since no dedicated knot-tying guide exists. Built on a new shared DiagramFigure component matching the site's existing decision-tree diagram's accessible, mobile-responsive pattern.

A real if-then commitment and a share prompt on the 15 flagship skill guides
The mission-and-identity behavioral design work from the meta-review initiative had only lived on 5 entry-point pages, but most real search traffic lands directly on a skill guide, not the homepage. Each of the 15 core skill guides (one per category, the flagship page for that topic) now ends with a real, specific if-then commitment, a forward-looking practice or restock action grounded in that guide's own content, not a generic template, plus a pass-it-on prompt. Both are new shared components (IfThenBox, ShareBox) built from the pattern already proven on Ready, Set, Ready and Family Communication Plan, rather than copy-pasting the same CSS and script into 15 separate files.

Sleep debt is a real cost during a sustained response, and a real watch-rotation fix
Physical Readiness for Emergencies adds a section on sleep debt's measurable effect on decision quality during an extended response, riskier choices, slower reaction time, more reliance on mental shortcuts under exactly the kind of uncertainty a disaster creates. Adds a real watch-rotation approach for a household sharing overnight duties: split sleep totaling 7-9 hours works about as well as one continuous block, a 20-minute tactical nap restores alertness for 2-3 hours, and the rotation gets decided once in advance rather than renegotiated nightly. Cross-linked both ways with the Act of Surviving's Running the Extended Plan, which already covers decision fatigue.

Naming survivor's guilt and identity loss, the part of recovery that shows up later
Psychological First Aid adds a section on survivor's guilt and identity loss, real, common reactions that surface weeks or months after a disaster, not in the first hours, distinct from the acute stress the rest of the guide covers, sourced to SAMHSA's own naming of guilt as a common disaster reaction. Points toward SAMHSA's National Helpline for ongoing treatment referral once the acute crisis has passed. Also adds FEMA's Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program, a real, free, disaster-specific counseling resource that activates after a federal disaster declaration, alongside the existing 988 and Disaster Distress Helpline listings.

A real mutual aid agreement template, and five references to it that used to point nowhere
Several places in this manual told households to put a community agreement in writing, modeled after a template that never actually existed anywhere on this site. Mutual Aid Agreement is that template now: printable, fillable fields for 2-3 households, who brings what skill or equipment, what's owed in return, a simple way to settle a disagreement, and signature lines, following the same printable pattern as the Ready, Set, Ready assessment. Security & Self-Defense, the Transportation addendum, Pet Evacuation & Shelter, and Finding Your Local Prep Community all now link to the real page instead of gesturing at one.

A real sequencing framework for prep spending versus debt, savings, and insurance
Financial Preparedness Basics adds a new section on where prep spending actually fits when money is tight: a small starter cash cushion first, then high-interest debt, then a full 3-to-6-month general emergency fund separate from this site's own gear tiers, then disability insurance ahead of life insurance if you have to choose, since a 20-year-old worker today has roughly a 1-in-4 chance of becoming disabled before retirement age. Sourced to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling and the Social Security Administration's own actuarial data, not invented.

Two new skill guides for households this site's usual assumptions leave out, plus a real plan for kids and sensory overload
Preparing Without Relying on Official Systems is new: what FEMA aid actually covers regardless of immigration status, how a mixed-status household can still apply for an eligible child, why disaster relief doesn't count against a public charge determination, and a national directory of free immigration legal aid. Safety Planning When Home Isn't Safe is new: real domestic-violence safety planning, since this site's usual assumption that home is the safe place and a shared family plan protects everyone doesn't hold there, a go-bag that doesn't tip off an abuser, an escape route, a code word, tech safety, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Family Communication Plan adds an age-tiered version of the plan for kids (5-7, 8-12, 13+) with a printable card. Psychological First Aid adds real autistic meltdown de-escalation technique, distinct from ordinary panic response.

Real scripts for the moments panic makes it hard to compose sentences
First Aid Basics adds the exact 4-step order for a 911 call (location first, then callback number, then what's happening, then stop talking and answer); Filing Claims After a Disaster adds a real first-notice-of-loss script for that first insurance call; Family Communication Plan adds the literal check-in text to send instead of composing one from scratch, plus a new section on verifying an alert is real (a genuine WEA/NOAA alert never asks you to click a link) before acting on it or forwarding it, cross-linked from What to Do Right Now's own normalcy-bias discussion.

A new mission and a behavioral-design pass across the site's entry points
This site now states its mission directly (as many households as possible, genuinely ready for the worst, as fast as realistically possible) and writes toward a specific reader identity, someone their household and community can count on, grounded in real behavior-change research rather than assuming information alone changes what people do. The Case for Preparedness gets a real, specific action tied to each of its 14 case studies instead of just a chapter link; the homepage adds a genuine 60-second first action and a way to pass the page to someone else; Ready, Set, Ready adds a fill-in-the-blank if-then plan and an honest, non-judgmental passage on why normal, documented psychology (not a character flaw) is what keeps people from starting; Family Communication Plan gets the same if-then treatment for its own plan.

New Tip callouts launched: handy, non-essential tricks layered on top of already-complete guides
A new Tip component (distinct from Note and Warn) now carries genuinely useful extras that aren't required to complete a guide: a dripping-faucet trick to keep pipes from freezing in Staying Warm Without Power, glow-in-the-dark tape to find the breaker panel and a flashlight in the dark in Fire-Starting & Generator Safety, and a note to photocopy both sides of every card (not just the front) attached to the Fireproof Document Bag item on the Shopping List, which flows automatically into the Readiness Ledger.

All 16 planning and logistics skill guides reviewed for the completeness pass, completing every skill guide on the site
Most of Bucket C was already thorough; the one real gap found was in Ham Radio Licensing & Off-Grid Mesh Networking, which adds the FCC's actual requirement to register an FRN before the exam (not after) and the Meshtastic region-setting step a new node needs before it will transmit at all, both genuine first-run blockers that weren't mentioned anywhere.
