Privacy Policy

This site collects almost nothing, and this page says exactly what, in plain language rather than a legal template. Effective September 2, 2026.

The short version

There's no account to create, no form to fill out, and no tracking pixel or analytics script running on this site. The checklist progress you see when you check off an item is saved in your own browser, never sent anywhere. The rest of this page covers the handful of things worth being specific about: hosting logs, site search, outbound links, and affiliate links.

Checklist progress

Every checklist on this site, the Shopping List, chapter checklists, and the rest, saves checked items using your browser's own local storage, keyed to the page and the specific item. That data never leaves your device: it isn't sent to a server, isn't tied to your identity, and isn't visible to anyone else, including the person running this site. Clearing your browser's site data for pbj.media, or using a private/incognito window, resets it. If local storage is unavailable or blocked, the checkboxes still work for that visit, they just won't be remembered next time.

Hosting logs

This site is hosted on Netlify, and like effectively every hosted website, the hosting infrastructure keeps standard server logs, things like IP address, browser type, and which pages were requested, for operating and securing the site. This isn't a separate tracking system this site added; it's the baseline logging any web server keeps, and it isn't used here for advertising or to build a profile of visitors.

Site search

The search box in the site's header runs entirely in your own browser against a static search index built when the site was published. Searching doesn't send your query to a server anywhere, this site included.

Offline access

This site can save a copy of its highest-stakes pages, First Aid Basics, What to Do Right Now, Family Communication Plan, and a handful of others, directly in your browser, so they still load if your internet goes down after you've visited the site at least once. This uses a standard browser feature called a service worker, and it works the same way the checklist progress above does: the saved pages live only in your own browser, never on a server, and nothing about what you've viewed or when is sent anywhere. A small "Available offline" label under the header confirms, honestly, whether the exact page you're on is actually saved, it only appears once that page is really sitting in your browser's cache, not just because the feature exists somewhere on the site. Clearing your browser's site data for pbj.media removes the saved pages the same way it resets checklist progress. If your browser doesn't support this feature, or you're browsing in a private/incognito window, the site simply works online only, nothing else changes.

Outbound links

This site links out to a lot of places: government agencies, nonprofits, research, and the specific organizations named throughout the Manual, the Skill Guides, and both companion manuals. It also links to Ko-fi for support, and to this project's YouTube and Instagram. Once you click through to any of those, you're on a different site with its own privacy practices, this policy only covers pbj.media itself.

Affiliate links

Some pages, currently or in the future, may include Amazon affiliate links, most likely on the Shopping List and next to specific books mentioned in Essential Reading. As an Amazon Associate, this site earns from qualifying purchases. If you buy something after clicking one of those links, this site may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you, the price you pay is the same either way. Amazon, not this site, handles that transaction and may set its own cookie to track the referral; this site doesn't see or store anything about what you bought. Any page carrying these links says so plainly near the top, not buried down here.

Children's privacy

This site doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, and since nothing here requires an account or a form, there's nothing to collect from a visitor of any age.

Changes to this policy

If what this site actually does changes, this page will be updated to match, and the effective date above will change with it. Given how little this site collects today, most future changes here would be about clarifying wording rather than about new tracking being added.
